The Elmira Pioneers have been a Southern Tier tradition for over a century. Baseball has been played in Elmira since 1888, and at Dunn Field since 1939. The club spent many years in the Eastern League and New York-Penn League, where they saw the likes of Earl Weaver, Cal Ripken Sr., Lou Piniella, Wade Boggs and Curt Schilling play or manage at the ballpark. From 1996 to 2005, the club was in the independent professional Northeast/Can-Am League, before joining the NYCBL, one of the nation's leading summer college baseball leagues, in 2006. The Pioneers were NYCBL champions in 2007.
What is the NYCBL and Summer College Baseball?
The New York Collegiate Baseball League is an NCAA-sanctioned summer baseball league comprised of teams of the top college players from across the nation and North America. All players in the league must have NCAA eligibility remaining in order to participate. Players are not paid (this preserves their NCAA eligibility).
Each team is operated similar to a professional minor league team, providing players an opportunity to play under the same conditions using wooden bats, minor league specification baseballs, experiencing road trips, and playing nightly before fans in a stadium.
